The school year
Concert, audition and recital months
Our year follows your student's school year. Playing at a recital is always a choice.
Back-to-school lesson weeks
Early August · Placement visits open, and lessons start the week school does.
Chair auditions at school
September · Many school bands seat their players early in the year. Your teacher can work on your audition music.
Fall concerts at school
October · Lessons that month go to the concert music your band or orchestra director chose.
Honor ensemble audition months
November · Students who want to try for a regional or honor group can bring that music to lessons.
Winter studio recital
December · A short evening for students who want to play for their families.
Spring term begins
Early January · A new term, and a good month to start lessons.
Solo and ensemble season
March · A student who plays a solo or small ensemble at a school festival can bring it to lessons first.
Spring recital
May · The year's second studio recital, the same month as the spring concerts at school.

What to expect
Three kinds of performance
Studio recitals
Two short evenings a year in the rehearsal room, in December and May, for students who want to play for their families.
School concerts
Your student's band or orchestra plays at school. Lessons that month go to the concert music, and we are happy to hear a run-through.
Auditions and festivals
Chair auditions, honor groups and solo and ensemble season are the student's choice. Your teacher helps with the music and nothing else is promised.
Start in time for the next concert
A placement visit takes a short afternoon, and lessons can begin the week after.
